Guidelines< Back to previous screen
The Department offers a multitude of services to the citizens of South Africa, as well as foreigners who wish to visit or stay in the country. Many times, the successful delivery of these services relies not only on our efforts. You have the responsibility of providing the Department with the correct documentation at the correct service delivery points.

Please keep the following guidelines in mind when dealing with the department to ensure the successful delivery of services:
  • The department has offices all over South Africa and a number of missions across the globe. Ensure that you deal with the offices closest to you.
  • Most of the departments' services are offered free of charge or at a minimal fee. Government officials are stationed at all offices to assist you in any dealings with the department. Do not pay unnecessary fees and commissions to agents or third parties claiming to have 'special' contacts in Home Affairs. All of the departments officials are committed to providing you with the best possible level of service at the prescribed fee and no more.
  • Make sure that any extra information or supporting documentation that might be required to assist you are ready when you contact the department, e.g. have the correct number of proper photographs with you when applying for a passports, or a copy of your marriage certificate when applying for residence, etc. All required documentation are listed in the services section.
