Extension/alteration of work permit (employed)

It is advisable that applications for extension of work permits be submitted at least eight (8) weeks prior to the expiry of the permit, since an expired permit cannot be extended.

The following documents are required:
  • Duly completed BI-159: G application form.
  • Employers must complete items 6 and 6.1 of the BI-159: G application form, sign the declaration and affix the company stamp. In the absence of a stamp, the appointment must be confirmed in a separate letter on the company's letterhead.
  • A copy of the official employment contract.
  • If applicable, proof of registration with the appropriate professional body.
  • Advertisements of the post, if the period of the original employment contract is to be extended.
  • An indication of the applicant's future plans.
  • A police clearance certificate (if this was not submitted when lodging the initial application).
  • A progress report confirming whether South African citizens/permanent residents have been or are being trained.
